Berry and Blossom’s use of a face oil in your daily beauty routine.

All About Face Oil

Mention oil as a skincare ingredient and people think of greasy skin. I hear all sorts of things about using oils on your skin, especially your face. From “they block your pores” to ” they leave a greasy residue” to “oils are bad for your skin”. I want to dispel these misconceptions and tell you to embrace oils for your face.

Plant Oils are the most ancient of skincare. Every indigenous civilization had their own beauty oils originating from flowers, nuts and seeds.

Now the modern cosmetic scientists research plant oils for their properties in promoting skin health and wellness.

Face oil formulations are finely tuned to assist in transferring natural phyto goodness in a light absorbent prescription.

Absorption and penetration

The Comedgenic scale is applied to oils to assess their lightness and non pore blocking ability. Hazelnut oil or Sunflower oil is zero, non pore blocking. While Cocoa butter is 4-5 and so pore blocking, but fine in small quantities as it has a lot to offer skin. 0-2 Comedgenic ratings are absorbant dry oils, due to their small molecules. The heavier wet oils lock in hydration and protect the skin barrier and eventually seal into the upper layers of the epidermis.

Benefits

Carefully formulated Face oils can actually provide moisture while actively helping to clarify pores. The organic Hazelnut oil in The Dose is a key source of linoleic acid. An omega-3 fatty acid that has been shown to effectively balance skin and prevent clogged pores. Especially in complexions prone to blemishes.

Plant Oils help protect the skin against the signs of ageing. These type of oils work to plump the skin up and smooth out fine lines. Every skincare routine should include an oil based skin product especially the over 30’s. A time when the skin starts to change.

The right plant oil or a beautiful fusion of beneficial oils can make a remarkable difference for dry, flaky, or dehydrated . Thankfully Facial oils are for those whose skin could use a boost of nourishing and smoothing renewal. Especially during sensitive and hormonal episodes or when seasonal cold or drier conditions disturb your skin.

Face oil properties

Facial oils can include a range non-fragrant plant oils (your skin will love these) which target different problems, dryness, oiliness, balancing, toning, blemishes while delivering nutrients and lock in hydration.

Skin needing fats to fortify the skin’s protective layer – the barrier.

As we age our ability to produce these essential fats dwindle. Ceramides are reponsible for creating lipids to reinforce barrier hydration. Cholestrol, responsible for skin elasticity, and Essential and non Essential Fatty acids, which are needed constantly by the skin.

Some examples…

Pumpkin balances sebum production.

Rosehip seed tackles inflammation and redness and is rich in Vitamins A and C.

Sea buckthorn provides Omega fats and phytoceramides,

Evening Primrose benefits cell renewal.

Carrot seed oil is filled with beta carotene, a rich source of phyto Vitamin A and C.

Olive Squalane balances oil production, it replicates sebum and accepted by the skin.

Camellia oil is rich in Omega 6 and 9 fatty acids, and anti oxidants protects the skin barrier.

Pomegranate oil provides Omegas, Vitamin F from two fats — alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and linoleic acid (LA). Linoleic acid is a primary fat in the Omega-6, forming Omega 3 essential fatty acid. Essential means the skin cannot make these EFAs, we need to provide them.

Are Facial Oils Right for You?

Facial oils are right for you if you struggle with occasional persistent dry, flaky, or dehydrated skin and your moisturizer just isn’t doing enough no matter how enriched and emollient it is.

Rather than continually searching for a new moisturizer, you can easily add a facial oil to your routine and see a beautiful difference. Your skin will feel smoother, softer, and more resilient.

You could use the facial oil under your moisturiser or on its own.

Skin

Dry skin and oily skin are both considered skin types.

Dry complexions produce less of the skin’s natural oils, known as sebum, than normal skin. The amount of sebum produced by the skin begins to naturally diminish over time, making dry skin an issue. Many experience it at one time or another.

The oil-based formula of The Dose is brimming with ingredients that replenish moisture loss, imparting a supple texture. Providing crucial phytoceramides (a plant-based ceramide) found in ingredients like Avocado, Grapeseed and Carrot seed oil. By providing healing phytonutrients and omega fatty acids it boosts moisture levels in parched skin and supports a strong barrier. The complexion’s first line of defense against external aggressors.

Oily skin on the other hand has an excess of sebum, which can lead to inflammation and breakouts. This is most often due to hormonal changes that send oil glands into overdrive. On the other hand sometimes dehydrated skin is mistaken as oily. Since in the absence of hydration the skin compensates by producing excess oil.

It may seem nonsense to apply face oil to an already oily complexion, but there are plant oils that can help balance and control sebum production in the skin, like Pumpkin, Hazelnut and Olive Squalane. Many plant oils offer anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that help to reduce and banish breakouts.

Purpose: Moisturise and seal in Hydration

Hydration and moisture are essential basic needs of the skin. While hydration swells the water content in skin cells, moisturizing requires the use of oils to nourish the skin and strengthen the epidermis, and the protective skin barrier. They lock in hydration and keep irritants out.

I have formulated creams and face oils to assist a routine to meet the skin’s needs for assisting hydration and moisture. It begins with the deeply hydrating and nourishing with an active rich oil, followed by the nourishing moisturiser to seal the skin.

My process of developing a face oil is by exploring nourishing moisturising oils, with the ability of penetration of a serum. My formula allows it to sink in instantly, delivering plant sourced goodness deep within the skin’s layers, targetingthe source of skin concerns. The Dose offers many benefits supporting the complexion’s natural ability of balance and renewal.

The Dose has Tamanu oil, which soothes compromised skin and provide antibacterial benefits to help clarify the complexion. Hazelnut oil, another one of our formula’s potent foundation oils, is rich in linoleic acid and tannins, making it a natural, alcohol-free astringent to keep pores clear, combat bacteria and prevent blemishes. Added to these are ancient healers like Calendula, Peppermint, Evening primrose and Rosehip which work to restore balance, calm hormonal skin.

Facial oils are helpful for keeping skin’s vital hydration locked in and they have incredible, instantaneous skin-smoothing properties. Think of a plant oil or a blend of plant oils as a booster to supplement your skincare routine.
